This octopus was in a tide pool with very little cover. When it first saw me it searched the perimeter of the pool before finding a spot to settle into where it remained for the next couple of weeks. It was nervous but after a few days did accept food from me. Note the injury to one of its arms.
I decided that breaking my "one photo" rule was justified for these four views of the swell we saw on this day. The sun was bright and the sea was beautiful with waves breaking even before they came into the bay.
The California quail family became used to my presence but there were limits. Here mother decided I was too close and moved the chicks away.
Juvenile variable oystercatcher learning to find food for itself. It is most likely that these two were from the same family as the one shown on 14 November (http://www.raewyn-adams.nz/blog/happy-family).
The white belladonna lily is beautiful but its flower heralds the change of season. A few autumn flowers are a bit early this year.
It is called Phycosecis limbatus and doesn't have a common name. It's 2-3mm long and lives on decayed matter in coastal areas.
