My favourite tide-pool animal is the octopus, but this little squid was great to watch. It was wary of me, but stayed in the open water and seemed to be watching me as much as I watched it. The photo was taken underwater with a GoPro camera.
A young Caspian tern was on the beach with its parents. They took exception to the proximity of the black-backed gull and repeatedly attacked it. The gull just cowered and made no attempt to leave.
This foal was only a day or two old when we arrived at the campsite and it was a great opportunity to see it reaching out and learning about its world. Here it wants to play with Mum while she just wants to rest.
The parent bringing the fish was chased by several other white-fronted terns before it finally made it to the juvenile it was trying to feed. Even then it had to fend off other birds. The fish is a garfish, also known locally as piper..
