We have had a warm winter and some skylarks were singing whenever the day was sunny. Now that it's spring there are a lot more proclaiming their territory.
Even the large seed ball doesn't last long so I tried loose seed in a feeder. The greenfinches selected what they wanted and threw the rest on the ground. Then the sparrows had their turn and did the same. The feeder was empty in just over a day.
Dysdera crocata. I have seen these in the garden occasionally but this is the first time I caught one to photograph. I let it go back near the compost bin where I found it - plenty of slaters (woodlice) for it there.
This road is adjacent to an estuary frequented by spoonbills, so seeing birds in the area is not unusual. Seeing one on the road like this is a first for me.
I pulled over to take the photo, and the bird flew off before the oncoming car became a danger. The car pulled to the side and stopped anyway, and as I moved off the driver had his hands over his face in a gesture of amazement. It looked like he didn't believe what he had just seen. |
